Nelson Mullins’ West Virginia Office Recognized for Efforts to Help with Flood Recovery

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (Oct. 26, 2016)–As a result of the deadly floods in West Virginia in June, the West Virginia State Bar, Legal Aid of West Virginia, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partnered to provide limited legal assistance to low-income residents impacted by the disaster. Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s West Virginia office attorneys stepped up to support the effort and recently were honored by Legal Aid of West Virginia with a Making the Difference Award. Of counsel Thomas M. Hancock accepted the award on behalf of the Firm.

Nelson Mullins’ contributions to the flood disaster relief included providing pro bono guidance and legal representation related to FEMA appeals for low-income residents who sustained damage to their homes. Mr. Hancock and associate Ashley Barebo drafted guidance documents to help educate other attorney volunteers and Legal Aid staff regarding FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. They created a “FAQ” on the issue that is posted on the Legal Aid website as a public resource. In addition, the office has committed to researching deed and tax records to prove home ownership to ensure eligibility for FEMA assistance.

Also, days after the flood, nine attorneys (Mr. Hancock, J. Lauren H. Savory, Randall L. Saunders, Nathan I. Brown, Sarah Massey, Megan B. Davis, Kendra Huff, Alyssa Lechmanik, and Melissa Foster Bird) provided legal guidance at tables set up by the Consumer Protection Division of the West Virginia Attorneys General’s Office.

Established in 1897, Nelson Mullins has more than 500 attorneys and other professionals with offices in Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
