Even if your company doesn’t offer paid maternity leave, eligible employees are entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave under the Family Medical Leave Act, provided your workplace has 50 employees or more working within a 75-mile radius, Ms. Johnson explains. “More companies are realizing that if they want to retain their high-performing employees, they need to offer paid leave,” she says. “Companies with generous policies have more success attracting and retaining talent.” Ms. Johnson also suggests initiating a discussion with your manager at least a month before your due date, not the day you are leaving the office to give birth.
